A Journey Through Time: The Evolution of NISU Batad Campus
The NISU Batad Campus has a dynamic history that began in 1965 with the establishment of Batad National and Vocational High School (BNAVHS) under Republic Act 4173. Spanning nearly 53 hectares, the school officially opened its doors in 1971 as a vocational institution, aiming to meet the educational needs of the community. Recognizing the importance of agriculture in the region, BNAVHS received approval from the Higher Education Commission in 1976 to launch a two-year Associate in Agricultural Technology program. By 1980, this program evolved into a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s development.
In 1992, another pivotal transformation occurred when BNAVHS merged with Batad Barangay High School through Republic Act 7348, becoming the Batad Polytechnic College. This merger led to the expansion of academic offerings, introducing three new Bachelor's degree programs: Bachelor of Secondary Education (with majors in Mathematics and English), Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (with specializations in Crop and Animal Science), and Bachelor of Science in Industrial Education (focused on Food Technology and Electronics). In 1998, the Associate in Computer Science program was upgraded into a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology, further broadening the institution’s academic reach.
In 2000, the Batad Polytechnic College underwent another major transition by integrating with the Northern Iloilo Polytechnic State College (NIPSC) through CHED Memorandum Order No. 27, officially becoming NIPSC Batad Campus. This integration brought new opportunities, including the introduction of the Bachelor of Science in Hotel and Restaurant Management and the Bachelor in Electronics Technology, programs that were offered until 2019. In 2018, the campus launched the Bachelor in Technology and Livelihood Education (BTLED) program, which has rapidly gained popularity and is now a key component of the campus' educational offerings.
Three of the campus' programs have achieved Level II accreditation, and the BTLED program has received a certificate of compliance from the Commission on Higher Education. In recent years, the campus has made significant strides with new developments, including the expansion of the Dragon Fruit Farm and the establishment of a Falcata Nursery, further strengthening its agricultural focus.
In 2023, under the leadership of Dr. Veminrose A. Clariza-Samuel, the campus embarked on several key infrastructure projects. Among these were the creation of a Study Hub/Study Center and the construction of Botin Hall, which provide students with enhanced learning environments. Additionally, plans for the establishment of a student dormitory are underway, which will accommodate the growing student population. The partitioning of the Campus Admin Office is also in progress to improve administrative efficiency.
Dr. Veminrose A. Clariza-Samuel was formally designated as the Campus Administrator of NISU Batad Campus by the Northern Iloilo State University (NISU) Office of the University President through two memoranda. The first memorandum, dated December 27, 2022, covers her term from January 3, 2023, to January 2, 2025. The second, dated June 28, 2024, extends her role from July 1, 2024, to June 30, 2026. Both orders emphasize her responsibilities, which include overseeing university programs, protecting campus properties, managing curriculum reviews, and submitting monthly reports to the university president.
To expand the academic landscape further, the campus has initiated two major new undertakings: the expansion of the Agricultural Resources Facility and the campus-wide improvement of student services. These developments aim to support students and faculty engaged in agricultural and technology-driven education.
Through a dynamic partnership with the local government unit (LGU), the NISU Batad Campus has bolstered its research capabilities. The College Research and Development Center (RDC) is a thriving hub that houses the Farmers Information and Technology Services (FITS) and the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) office. These facilities play a crucial role in research, training, technology transfer, and providing online government services.
A significant milestone occurred on April 26, 2022, when the Commission on Higher Education approved the conversion of Northern Iloilo Polytechnic State College (NIPSC) into Northern Iloilo State University (NISU) through Commission En Banc Resolution No. 222-2022. This transformation underscores the institution's commitment to expanding its educational offerings and enhancing its impact on the community.
