Northern Iloilo State University (NISU) successfully partnered with the Trikakti Institute of Tourism in Indonesia to deliver a dynamic Online Short Course focused on culture, tourism, and language. Held over two days, the collaborative event brought together students, faculty, and international resource persons in a virtual exchange of knowledge and cultural insights.
The short course kicked off on May 7, 2025, with an enthusiastic turnout of approximately 200 students from both institutions. On May 8, the program continued with active participation from around 180 Bachelor of Science in Tourism and Hospitality Management majors from NISU. The sessions highlighted the rich cultural heritage and tourism potentials of both countries, emphasizing cross-cultural communication, sustainable tourism practices, and basic language exchange.
Faculty and guest speakers from Trikakti Institute shared expert insights on Indonesia’s tourism strategies and cultural preservation, while NISU faculty provided perspectives on Philippine tourism development and regional cultural identity. The short course also featured interactive language learning segments to promote mutual understanding and appreciation of Bahasa Indonesia and Filipino.

Estancia, Iloilo — May 6, 2025 — In a bold step toward globalizing its academic programs, Northern Iloilo State University (NISU) has formally signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with ADAPPER Management Consultancy Services (AMC) to implement the Student Internship Abroad Program (SIAP) for the College of Hospitality Management.

The agreement paves the way for qualified Hospitality Management students to gain valuable international exposure through internships in world-class hotels, resorts, and tourism establishments across the globe.

NISU Strengthens Global Ties Through Internship and Exchange Program with Universitas Kristen Indonesia
In line with its ongoing efforts to build meaningful international partnerships, Northern Iloilo State University (NISU) is actively working to secure opportunities for students to engage in international internships and exchange programs. Like many other local and international institutions, NISU is committed to providing its students with global exposure and academic enrichment through cross-border collaborations.
In June 2024, Dr. Fernan Peniero Tupas was appointed as the focal person for NISU by the SEAMEO-SEATeacher Project. Recognizing the opportunity, Dr. Tupas sought the approval of University President Dr. Bobby D. Gerardo to formalize NISU’s participation in the project. With the president’s full support, the agreement was swiftly signed.
While exploring potential host institutions from the SEATeacher network, Dr. Tupas identified Universitas Kristen Indonesia (UKI) as a promising partner. After initiating contact through a series of email exchanges and WhatsApp communications starting in September 2024, both institutions agreed to a collaborative internship and exchange program.
As a result, beginning April 13, 2025, four students from various colleges and campuses of NISU were selected to participate in the program.

Four students from the College of Education, Bachelor of Elementary Education (BEEd) program at Northern Iloilo State University (NISU) – Main Campus, Estancia, Iloilo, have been selected to participate in the SEATeacher Project Batch 10. The selected students—Ma. Jovena Grace Inocencio, Mariel Cloma, Althea Mae Mogote, and Shannah Cheng—will be supervised by Dr. Ave Maria P. Genodia, Chairperson of the BEEd program, during their international internship at Universitas PGRI Yogyakarta (UPY), Indonesia, from April 13 to May 10, 2025.
This initiative reflects NISU’s ongoing commitment to strengthening international linkages and collaborations. Through the SEATeacher program, the participants will engage in a variety of enriching academic and cultural activities, including school visitations, Philippine cultural presentations, and lectures on the Philippine education system, among others.
NISU's partnership with UPY began with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in 2018, during the administration of former University President Dr. Ma. Theresa G. Palomres. The MoU was successfully renewed in 2024 under the leadership of Dr. Ma. Xerxa Doane Billones, then Director of the Communication and International Collaboration Office (CICO).
In February 2025, newly appointed CICO Director Dr. Fernan Peniero Tupas secured a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with UPY’s Faculty of Education, further solidifying the collaboration between the two institutions. With strong support from University President Dr. Bobby D. Gerardo, the program was finalized, paving the way for student participation.
Following the MoA signing, a series of meetings between NISU and UPY led to the selection process. After a week of interviews, four BEEd students were chosen to represent NISU in this prestigious international exchange program.

On March 19, 2025, at noon Philippine time, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) in Surabaya, Indonesia, and Northern Iloilo State University (NISU) solidified their partnership by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This agreement aims to establish international collaboration between the two institutions, with a specific focus on marine ecosystems and ocean literacy.
This initiative seeks to enhance educational and research capabilities in these vital areas, fostering a deeper understanding of our oceans and the ecosystems they support. ASEAN Universities Exhibition and Forum 2025 (AEF2025)

We are excited to announce that two of our esteemed Campus Administrators from Northern Iloilo State University (NISU) have been granted the opportunity to participate in the ASEAN Universities Exhibition and Forum 2025 (AEF2025) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from February 23-25, 2025. Dr. Ruby Yotoko from the Barotac Viejo Campus and Dr. Wilfreda G. Arones from the Lemery Campus will represent our institution at this significant event.
Dr. Bobby D. Gerardo, our university president, is a strong advocate for internationalization and globalization. He is committed to fostering an environment that encourages faculty and students to engage in global events, emphasizing the crucial role of international linkages in the university's growth and development. His support underscores the importance of broadening our horizons and collaborating with other institutions across Southeast Asia.

NISU and TAU Sign Groundbreaking Memorandum of Understanding
A significant milestone was achieved with the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between Tarlac Agricultural University and Northern Iloilo State University (NISU). The MOU was signed by the university presidents, Dr. Bobby D. Gerardo of NISU and Dr. Silverio Ramon D.C. Salunson of Tarlac Agricultural University, during a gathering that included key officials from both institutions.
This agreement aims to foster collaboration in several areas, including research partnerships, faculty and student exchange programs, and support for the upcoming Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Bootcamp, among others. Initially, the focus will be on collaboration between the College of Agriculture and the College of Education. However, as discussions progressed, Dr. Salunson expressed interest in expanding collaboration to include the Colleges of Management and other disciplines.
Dr. Gerardo highlighted the importance of integrating technology into agriculture and aquaculture as a key focus area for NISU. He also took pride in showcasing a recent university project related to cacao, featuring products that embody the branding "Tatak NISU," which celebrates the institution's commitment to innovation and excellence in agriculture. This partnership is expected to pave the way for enhanced educational opportunities and research advancements for both universities.
Insights and Outcomes from the International Conference on Fisheries and Aquaculture: Bangkok, Thailand
The 11th International Conference for Fisheries and Aquaculture (ICFA) was successfully held in Bangkok, Thailand, from September 26-27, 2024. Organized by The International Institute of Knowledge Management (TIIKM) and sponsored by Genomax Technologies Co. Ltd, the event saw participation from academics, industry leaders, and stakeholders from ten countries, all gathered to discuss innovative strategies for sustainable, eco-friendly fisheries practices.
The theme of this year's conference, "Navigating Towards Carbon-Neutral Fisheries: Sustaining the Blue Economy in a Green Future," emphasized the urgent need for environmentally responsible approaches in the fishing industry. Delegates participated in sessions and workshops designed to foster collaboration and explore the latest research and technologies in fisheries and aquaculture.
Notably, the Northern Iloilo State University (NISU), an academic partner at this event, was represented by Dr. Larry B. Deysolong, Vice President for Research and Extension, and Dr. Marjorie A. Villanueva, Chairperson of the College of Fisheries and Allied Sciences (CFAS) Concepcion Campus. During the conference, they signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) that highlights a commitment to collaboration between NISU and TIIKM. This agreement includes the appointment of a Coordinator for relevant conference committees and the selection of 2-3 Scientific Committee members to review submitted abstracts. Furthermore, NISU will contribute two members each to both the evaluation and session chair committees, ensuring meaningful involvement in technical sessions and the awards ceremony.
In addition to the MOA, Dr. Villanueva presented a research paper during the Aquatic Health Management and Disease Control session, while Dr. Deysolong served as a technical evaluator in the Nutrition and Feed Manufacturing session. Their participation highlights NISU's dedication to advancing research in the fisheries sector.
The conference offered numerous networking opportunities, enabling participants to forge new partnerships aimed at addressing the pressing challenges within the fisheries and aquaculture industries. By promoting collaboration across borders, ICFA continues to serve as a vital platform for knowledge exchange and innovation.
Moreover, participants from NISU were offered a range of additional benefits through the MOA, including discounted proofreading services, opportunities for customized workshops led by the editor-in-chief of a high-ranking journal, and two years of free membership in the TIIKM Global Academic Network (TIIKM GAN). This collaboration will further enhance NISU's capabilities to engage in international research initiatives and conferences moving forward.
With the MOA taking effect on September 26, 2024, and set to expire on September 26, 2027, both TIIKM and NISU are excited about the potential outcomes of this partnership, which promises to strengthen academic and industry ties in the pursuit of sustainable fisheries practices.
