NISUnians showcase rich display of artistry through National Arts Month celebration

ESTANCIA, Iloilo—Northern Iloilo State University (NISU) launched its first celebration of the National Arts Month with the theme “Ani ng Sining, Diwa at Damdamin” through a display of visual, culinary, and performing arts at NISU Main Campus Gymnasium, February 26, 2025.

The event featured three competitions per college, namely; poster making, clay modeling, and Pinoy Meryenda food presentation, aimed to showcase the skills of the students of the university and let them express themselves through art.

“This month-long activity encourages creativity, self-expression, cultural appreciation, and social cohesion,” said Dr. Gilda E. Deguma, Vice President for Academic Affairs.

“I am welcoming all of you to celebrate and unleash the artist in you, so be active and participate and be an instrument to create an influence on our society by changing opinions, instilling good values, and translating experiences across space and time, thereby making a great impact on the community and the world,” she added.

Meanwhile, the invited guest speaker, Mr. Reden Aguadera, emphasized the significance of arts in life, underlying that everything around us is an art, and so in everything we do, we should be creative and put art into it, because if you do that, you’ll be far more successful than those who settle to be plain and common.

“Art is not just a form of expression; it is a journey of discovery, a path filled with endless possibilities. It challenges boundaries of imagination and invites you to explore new ideas and perspectives,” said Mr. Aguadera.

“Art is very influential; if you could use this [art] right, your artworks would be the voice of the unheard and the face of the unseen,” he added.

The celebration affirmed the university’s commitment to promoting arts alongside academic excellence. Dr. Michael Achas, Director for Socio-Cultural Affairs, shared his vision to celebrate the Art Month across six other external campuses of the institution

Northern Iloilo State University is deeply mournful of the passing of Dr. Zinnia Parcon Teruel, former Regional Director of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Region VI and former Board of Trustee Member of the Northern Iloilo Polytechnic State College (now NISU). Her loss leaves an immense void in the hearts of all who had the honor of working with her, and her remarkable contributions to both science and education will be forever remembered.
Throughout her career, Dr. Teruel was a visionary, dedicating her efforts to advancing science, technology, and education in the region. Her impact also extended to higher education, where, as a member of the NIPSC Board of Trustees, she played an instrumental role in shaping the future of the institution. Her legacy continues to inspire and guide future generations of students, faculty, and staff.
During this time of sorrow, we extend our deepest condolences to her family, friends, colleagues, and all who were touched by her presence. Her kindness, selflessness, and ability to inspire others forged enduring relationships with all who were fortunate to know her. While Dr. Teruel may no longer be with us, her legacy will live on through the countless lives she impacted and the lasting difference she made in her community, her country, and the fields of science and education.
May her soul rest in peace. Her leadership, dedication, and compassion will always be cherished, and she will be deeply missed.
